At 5am on October 2nd, 2009 we were awoken by car lights. The driver had stopped to pull a dead wombat off the road and knew to check her pouch. There was a tiny pink foot sticking out of the dead mother. As he did not know how to get the joey out safely he drove straight to Rocky Creek Wildlife Refuge.

To free live joeys from a dead mother's pouch carefully cut the pouch open (there is no blood) and lift the joey out gently. If still attached to the teat cut the teat close to the mother. Place the joey in something warm and take it to a trained wildlife carer as soon as possible.

Orri, weighing 440grams, was safely removed and started his 18 month journey towards release at Rocky Creek Wildlife Refuge.

Little Red Flying Fox
Little Red Flying Fox Face

This Little Red Flying Fox became impaled and twisted on a barbed wire fence. Whilst trying to free herself she ripped the roof of her mouth with the barbed wire. Her wing membrane was also badly damaged and she needed to be euthanased. Always call a vaccinated carer to a Flying Fox rescue.

One wombat in this video has patchy fur, she was found alone and had mange which has been successfully treated. Her fur has now grown back. The bigger, yet younger wombat, is Orri 6 months after his rescue.
Black Swan

The swan on the right was calling and searching for its mate on the dam. By the time we reached the rescue site the female had died from unknown causes. This was a sad and distressing sight.
